Turmus Cooperative Slaughterhouse Opens in Eldoret
On 10th June, Hand in Hand Eastern Africa, in partnership with the County Government of Uasin Gishu and with generous support from the Lind Foundation, proudly opened the Turmus Cooperative Slaughterhouse at Kimumu Bahati Market, Eldoret. This modern facility represents a significant step forward for farmers, particularly poultry producers, across Uasin Gishu and Elgeyo Marakwet.
The slaughterhouse provides a central, hygienic hub where farmers can process their products under regulated conditions. By offering a dependable slaughter point, it reduces value chain losses, raises product value, and strengthens cooperative bargaining power. It also creates new buyer linkages, ensuring that local producers have reliable access to markets.
The official opening was graced by Deputy Governor Evans Kapkea of Uasin Gishu County and Albert Wambugu, CEO of Hand in Hand Eastern Africa.
County trade and cooperative officials, project teams, Turmus Cooperative members, and members of the public joined in celebrating this milestone.
This facility is more than infrastructure; it is part of the Social and Economic Empowerment Project, which since 2023 has improved the wellbeing of 3,600 bottom‑of‑the‑pyramid members and 650 accelerated members. By strengthening producer groups, creating market linkages, and promoting hygienic slaughter practices, the slaughterhouse offers a replicable model for rural agribusiness growth. It also protects public health and builds consumer confidence in locally produced meat.
